Volumetric Weight Explained for Air Freight to Uganda
Volumetric weight is the space a parcel occupies expressed as a weight, and air freight to Uganda is billed on whichever is higher: your parcel's actual weight or its volumetric weight. This guide shows the formula, a worked example, and how to pack so a light but bulky box does not cost you more than it should.

Volumetric weight is the space your parcel takes up, expressed as a weight. Air freight to Uganda is billed on the chargeable weight, which is whichever is higher: the parcel's actual (scale) weight or its volumetric weight. Understanding this one number is the difference between an expected invoice and a nasty surprise on a big, light box.
Why airlines charge by volume, not just weight
An aircraft runs out of space long before it runs out of lifting capacity. A box of foam cushions weighs almost nothing but hogs cargo room that could otherwise carry dense, heavy freight. To price that fairly, carriers convert a parcel's dimensions into a weight figure and bill on the larger of the two numbers. This is standard practice for every international air forwarder, Shypt included.
The formula
For air freight, the widely used formula is:
Volumetric weight (kg) = (length cm x width cm x height cm) / 5000
Measure the longest points of the parcel, including packaging, multiply the three dimensions, and divide by 5000. Compare the result to the actual weight on the scale. The higher figure is your chargeable weight.
A worked example
Suppose you buy a set of lightweight plastic storage bins. They arrive at your warehouse in a box measuring 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm and weigh just 4 kg on the scale.
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 60 cm |
| Width | 40 cm |
| Height | 40 cm |
| Volume | 96,000 cubic cm |
| Volumetric weight | 96,000 / 5000 = 19.2 kg |
| Actual weight | 4 kg |
| Chargeable weight | 19.2 kg (the higher figure) |
Even though the scale says 4 kg, you are billed as if the parcel weighs 19.2 kg, because that is the space it occupies. This is exactly why the choice between air and sea freight matters so much for bulky goods.
Now compare a denser item: a 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm box that is packed full and weighs 25 kg. Its volumetric weight is still 19.2 kg, but the actual weight is higher, so you are billed on 25 kg. Dense goods are billed on actual weight; light, bulky goods are billed on volume.
How to keep your chargeable weight down
- Choose a right-sized box. Do not fly a small item in a large carton full of air.
- Remove bulky retail packaging where it is safe to do so; original shoeboxes and display boxes add volume.
- Compress soft goods. Clothes, towels and bedding pack down far smaller than their retail packaging suggests.
- Consolidate smartly. Combining several small parcels into one well-packed box often lowers the total chargeable weight versus shipping each separately. See our guide to package consolidation.
- Send bulky, non-urgent goods by sea, which is priced by cubic metre and usually far cheaper for voluminous cargo.
What Shypt does at the warehouse
When your parcels arrive at your warehouse address, Shypt weighs and measures each one, calculates the chargeable weight, and consolidates parcels where it saves you money. Freight is billed in the origin warehouse currency, USD for the US warehouse, EUR for Germany, GBP for the UK, and so on. You are emailed at every milestone rather than chasing a dashboard, and you can track a shipment whenever you want. Payment is by mobile money or bank deposit once your shipment is invoiced.
The takeaway
Volumetric weight is not a hidden fee, it is simply how air cargo is priced everywhere. Once you can run the length x width x height / 5000 calculation yourself, you can predict costs, pack smarter, and decide when to switch a bulky shipment to sea. Frequently asked questions
What is volumetric weight?+
Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, converts the space a parcel takes up into a weight figure. Airlines use it because a light but bulky parcel occupies space that could carry heavier cargo.
How is volumetric weight calculated?+
For air freight the common formula is length times width times height in centimetres, divided by 5000, giving the volumetric weight in kilograms. Shypt uses this standard divisor.
Which weight am I billed on?+
You are billed on the chargeable weight, which is the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight of your parcel.
Does sea freight use volumetric weight?+
Sea freight is usually priced by volume in cubic metres rather than by this air-freight formula, which is why bulky goods are often much cheaper to send by sea.
